Gynecomastia means enlarged mammary glands in males and it appears especially in adolescents during puberty, but also in advanced years of life. Through a physical change, the chest area may look almost female. An asymmetrically formed breast may also occur. In case of gynecomastia an enlarged man’s chest cannot be traced back to overweight. A reduction operation may help the affected persons to regain self-confidence.
Almost two thirds of the adolescents and one third of men have enlarged mammary glands and the causes are not always completely comprehendible. In case of male adolescents, enlarged mammary glands form back by themselves in some of the cases. Contrary to common assumptions, sports and a change of diet as well as hormonal therapies are insufficient in many cases to regain a flat and male chest area. It is particularly important in this regard to differentiate between a real gynecomastia and a so called pseudogynecomastia. In case of pseudogynecomastia the physical changes are traced back to fat deposits in the chest area. In case of a real gynecomastia there’s an increase of the mammary gland tissue.
During the plastic-surgical treatment of gynecomastia excessive mammary gland tissue is removed via surgical access. At the same time a reduction of fat tissue is possible to a limited extent via liposuction/smartlipo. Since the tissue constricts as a result of liposuction, the patient does not need an expensive tightening. During the surgical treatment of gynecomastia it is important to use a technique that leads to less significant scar formation.
The surgery can be performed at any age. In case of minor patients, it is particularly important to discuss the motivation for the surgery and the risks also with the parents. Insufficient movement and poor eating habits should not be seen as a reason for the appearance of female looking breasts.
During the gynecomastia surgery, a special incision is made. The aim is to keep the appearance of scars to a minimum and to maintain the sensibility and circulation of the nipples. The incision is sited on the lower edge of the mammary gland.
The surgery takes between 1, 5 to 2 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, twilight sleep or if desired under general anesthesia in our private clinic in Munich Grünwald.
14 days after the breast reduction/ breast lifting the stitches are removed. For a period of six weeks we recommend wearing compression underwear in order to achieve an optimum result.
Details and operation concepts of a gynecomastia surgery are clarified in a personal consultation with Dr. Kernt and will be adjusted to your individual needs.
